Starting as a journalist

On October 1, 2002 I report to the office of the Kumpulan Utusan Melayu. I was offered as a cadet reporter for two years. A new life begins. It did not cross my life to be a journalist, especially for the Utusan Malaysia newspaper.

I have only known Utusan Malaysia since I started reading. Probably around the age of five to six years. This is because my father buys this newspaper every day. Without Utusan Malaysia, the father’s breakfast would not be perfect.

Although I did not finish my Bachelor of Public Relations at Mara University of Technology, my father did not hinder my desire to join the newspaper established in 1938.

He bought me, a silk tie and vest from Bangkok. Maybe he was influenced by the television drama the journalist must wear a vest and hang a camera around his neck. The fact is, journalists dress like office clothes except for sports journalists who are given the flexibility to wear jeans and t-shirts.

Orientation as a journalist for a week, starting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. At 5 pm, all cadet journalists were directed to enter the editorial department office. Then we were given assignments with senior journalists to get exposure. Sometimes we are instructed to attend a ‘normal’ program alone without being attended by a senior.

I remember one night, I was wandering around Jalan P Ramlee and around KLCC looking for an art gallery in the pouring rain. I ride a motorcycle. Soaking wet.

Finally, after a month, I was placed at the crime desk on a regular basis.

This is the beginning of my life as a journalist.
